Experimental verification of an Oseen flow slender body theory

چکیده
Consider uniform flow past four slender bodies with elliptical cross-section of constant ellipticity along the length of 0, 0.125, 0.25 and 0.375, respectively, for each body. Here, ellipticity is defined as the ratio of the semiminor axis of the ellipse to the semimajor axis. The bodies have a pointed nose which gradually increases in cross-section with a radius of curvature 419mm to a mid-section which then remains constant up to a blunt end section with semimajor axis diameter 160mm, the total length of all bodies being 800mm. The bodies are side-mounted within a low-speed wind tunnel with an operational wind speed of the order 30m s−1. The side force (or lift) is measured within an angle of attack range of −3◦ to 3◦ such that the body is rotated about the major axis of the ellipse cross-section. The lift slope is determined for each body, and how it varies with ellipticity. It is found that this variance follows a straight line which steadily increases with increasing ellipticity. It is shown that this result is predicted by a recently developed Oseen flow slender body theory, and cannot be predicted by either inviscid flow slender body theory or viscous crossflow theories based upon the Allen and Perkins method.

Analytic Solution for Hypersonic Flow Past a Slender Elliptic Cone Using Second-Order Perturbation Approximations
An approximate analytical solution is obtained for hypersonic flow past a slender elliptic cone using second-order perturbation techniques in spherical coordinate systems. The analysis is based on perturbations of hypersonic flow past a circular cone aligned with the free stream, the perturbations stemming from the small cross-section eccentricity. By means of hypersonic approximations for the ...
متن کاملStability of Symmetric and Asymmetric Vortex Pairs over Slender Conical Wings and Bodies
Theoretical analyses are presented for the stability of symmetric and asymmetric vortex pairs over slender conical wings and bodies under small perturbations in an inviscid incompressible flow at high angles of attack and sideslip. The three-dimensional problem of a pair of vortices over slender conical wings and bodies is reduced to a problem in two dimensions by using the conical flow assumpt...

Theoretical analyses of the stability of symmetric and asymmetric vortex pairs over slender conical wing-body combinations consisting of a slender circular or elliptic cone and a flat-plate delta wing under small perturbations in an inviscid incompressible steady flow at high angles of attack with or without sideslip are presented. The three-dimensional flow problem is reduced to a problem in t...
متن کاملApproximate Viscous Shock-Layer Analysis of Axisymmetric Bodies in Perfect Gas Hypersonic Flow
In this paper, an approximate axisymmetric method is developed which can reliably calculate fully viscous hypersonic flow over blunt-nosed bodies. In this method, a Maslen’s second-order pressure expression is used instead of the normal momentum equation. The combination of Maslen’s second-order pressure expression and viscous shock layer equations is developed to accurately and efficiently com...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of Asymmetry of Vortex Flow Over Single Delta Wings
It is generally believed that, on slender delta wings, there is a critical state at which strong asymmetric vortices are found along the leading edge on the lee-side of the delta wing. These asymmetric vortices can lead to high lateral forces even when slender delta wing is at the zero angle of yaw. Some experimental studies reported recently, cast considerable doubt as to the validity of the a...
